Abstract

905,253. Ceramic glass. CORNING GLASS WORKS. June 30, 1960 [July 1, 1959; May 18, 1960], No. 23000/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 56. [Also in Group XXXVI] A semi-crystalline ceramic body intended for use as a dielectric comprises, as to at least 30- 90%, the constituent oxides of at least one oxygen octahedra ferro-electric compound, at least 30% of the body being in the form of a crystalline phase uniformly dispersed in another phase, being crystallized in situ from a homogeneous glass, the body containing at least one glass-forming oxide. The percentages quoted are " cationic mol." figures, i.e. figures calculated in respect of molecules, or part molecules, containing one cationic atom, e.g. SiO 2 , AlO 1 . 5 . The glass-forming composition is melted, cooled and heat-treated to crystallize it. The temperature at which crystallization occurs is determined by " differential thermal analysis," i.e. observing discontinuities in the rate of change of temperature, during heating, as a result of endothermic and exothermic processes occurring in the glass. The optimum heat treatment temperature is mid-way between the crystallization temperature and about 50 ‹ C. below the melting temperature which can be similarly determined. The length of treatment decreases with increasing temperature. The preferred oxygen octahedra ferro-electric compound is barium titanate and the initial composition for this purpose contains 30-15% BaO, 15-10% TiO 2 , the amount of BaO being 0-100% in excess of the 1/1 stoichiometric equivalent of BaTiO 3 on the amount of TiO 2 present, 7-26% SiO 2 , 3-30% AlO 1.5 , the amount of AlO 1.5 not differing from the amount of SiO 2 by more than about <SP>4</SP>/ 3 of the amount of SiO 2 and 0.5 to 1.5% F, the total of BaO, TiO 2 , SiO 2 , AlO 1.5 and F being at least 90%. Other oxides which may be added are those of K, Li, Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Zn, Cd, Ga, In, Ti, Y, La, Ce, Zr, Ge, Sn, Sb, Bi, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Te, U, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pb, Cu. Other compositions are given in which the glassforming oxide used instead of, or in addition to, SiO 2 is B 2 O 3 or P 2 O 5 . Further compositions are given which form a body in which the ferroelectric compound consists of one or more of:- titanate of barium or cadmium; niobate of sodium, potassium, strontium, cadmium, barium or lead; zirconate of cadmium, barium or lead; tantalate of sodium or cadmium; ferrate of lead or lanthanum; germanate of iron; tungstic oxide. Specification 567,996 and U.S.A. Specification 2,405,529 are referred to.
