Abstract

905,211. Drawing capillary glass tubes. LOBER, H., [trading as GLASWERK WERTHEIM GERATE FUR WISSENSCHAFT UND TECHNIK, Dr. FR. FRIEDRICHS, Dr. J. FRIEDRICHS, C. ZITZMANN, R. BRAND UND Dr. H. LOBER]. Oct. 24, 1960 [Jan. 8, 1960], No. 36495/60. Class 56. [Also in Group XX] In the manufacture of singlebore glass capillary tubing for liquid thermometers and liquid flow timing devices, a cavity is formed in a gather, a vitreous body of smaller dimensions is inserted in the cavity and the gather is then drawn to the required outside diameter of the tubing so that the resulting tubing has a bore with a cross-sectional area from 1 to 3Á. As shown, a gather 1 is formed with a circular cavity 2 by using a steel rod. A circular glass rod 3 is fused to the wall surface of the cavity 2 to leave a scimitar-shaped space. The gather 1 may then be coated with glass before being drawn. The rod 3 may have different shapes, such as triangular, with one side ground to fit the surface of the cavity, or semi-circular. The rods may be of different glass and may be coloured. The gather may be coated on the outside with white enamel to increase reflection and may also be shaped prismatically. Such capillary tubes are particularly suitable for thermometers.
