Abstract
Polybutadiene of high cis,-1,4 configuration is made by polymerizing butadiene in the liquid phase in the presence of a three component catalyst systen consisting of (A) a carrier-supported metal oxide in the form of a fine powder or porous solid selected from nickel and cobalt oxides, (B) a halide selected from boron halides and complexes thereof, the halides of Group IV(a) and V(a), the oxyhalides of a metal of Group V(a), and organometallic halogen-containing compounds of metals of Group IV(a), and (C) a compound selected from organometallic compounds, and hydrides of the metals of Group I, II and III of the Periodic Table, and alkali-metal powders. The Periodic Table used is that described as "Table I" on p. 517 of volume 17 of the Encyclopaedia Britannica (1960). Specified (B) components of the catalyst are boron trifluoride, trichloride and tribromide, and their etherates, titanium trichloride, titanium tetrachloride and tetrabromide, zirconium tetrachloride, vanadium tetrachloride, vanadium oxychloride, alkyl titanium trichlorides, and dicyclopentadienyl titanium dichloride. The (C) component of the catalyst may be a trialkyl aluminium, a dialkyl or alkyl aluminium halide, a trialkyl boron, dialkylmagnesium, dialkyl zinc, dialkyl cadmium, an alkyl sodium, potassium, or lithium compound, or an aluminium boron, calcium, lithium, sodium, lithium aluminium, lithium boron, or aluminium boron hydride, or lithiumaluminiumtetralkyl, or sodium or potassium metal powders. The polymerization may be effected in bulk or in an organic diluent such as benzene, toluene, a xylene, cyclohexane, heptane, pentane, petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride, chlorobenzene, or mixtures thereof. The carrier for component (A) of the catalyst may be diatomaceous earth, silica, silica-alumina, titania, zirconia, active clay, or kaolin. Specification 846,731 is referred to.
