An S-shaped insert 11 for pinning a split log is made of a synthetic material, e.g. a styrene polymer, and has a tapered or sharpened edge 13 for driving into the log to straddle the split. Ribs 14 tapered towards the edge 13 are formed on the moulded insert, which may be cut with the log during a veneer peeling operation.
