Abstract
Carbocyanine dyes having the general <FORM:0905030/IV (b)/1> wherein the groups R are alkyl groups which may be different from each other, R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl, alkoxy or carbalkoxy group and X is an acid radical, are prepared by reacting 1 mol of a 1,3,3,-trialkyl-2-methylene-indoline-5-carboxylic ester with 1 mol of a 1,3,3,-trialkyl-2-methylene-indoline-o -aldehyde which may have 5-alkyl, alkoxy or carbalkoxy substituent, or by reacting 1 mol of a 1,3,3,-trialkyl-5-carbalkoxy-2-methylene-indoline-o -aldehyde with 1 mol of a 1,3,3,-trialkyl-2-methylene-indoline which may carry a 5-alkyl or alkoxy substituent, the reactions being carried out in glacial acetic acid and in the presence of acetic anhydride at elevated temperature. TThe acetate salts which are produced may be converted to salts having other values of X. The groups R may be methyl or ethyl and R1 may be methyl, methoxy or ethoxy.
