904,842. Typewriters. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. May 20, 1960 [May 23, 1959], No. 17882/60. Class 100 (4). Printing, character by character, is controlled by a format tape and an information tape, the format tape controlling the printing of fixed data and the positions of the variable data supplied by the information tape. The output of a computer 1 is perforated on a tape at 3 in " 2 out of 5 " code. The information is read and applied to a buffer store 6. Fixed data is read from a format tape at 4 and applied to a buffer store 7. Switch 9 is normally in right-hand position so that format data is applied through a further buffer store 10 to the printing device 5. At the detection in 7 of a special signal, however, circuit 8 reverses switch 9 to record computer information from store 6. This special signal occurs for each character of the computer information. A second type of special signal reverses switch 12 whereby a pair of digits from store 6 can be converted at 11 into a sign or an alphabetical character. A third type of signal can suppress computer information by advancing the tape at 3 quickly. Different formats 4 may be used, selection of a format being effected by characters on the computer tape via switch 13.
