Abstract

904,606. Ventilating vehicles. SMITH & SONS (AUSTRALIA) PTY. Ltd., S. June 19, 1961 [June 29, 1960], No. 22117/61. Class 137. [Also in Group XIII] An evaporative air cooling device, particularly for motor vehicles, comprises a fan 3 driven by a motor 2 to admit air through an inlet duct, hollow truncated conical centrifugal pumping means 4 connected coaxially in tandem with said fan, said pumping means having its lower and smaller end immersed below the liquid level of a reservoir 5 and its upper and larger end provided with peripheral apertures 17. On rotation by the fan motor of the pumping means 4 a film of liquid is raised upon its internal surface, droplets are flung from the apertures 17 into a spray chamber 7 bounded by a permeable cellular mesh 19, a mixture of air and liquid droplets passes through the mesh to a separator chamber 6 and then to an evaporation chamber 20 through deflecting baffles 10 which remove the larger droplets, and the cooled air is ejected through outlet ducts having adjustable louvres 22. A metallic gauze filter 23 is provided round the lower part of the pumping means 4 at the top of which is formed a flange 18 having its lower face roughened to deflect the water droplets downwardly and outwardly. The fan motor 2 is of the variable-speed type and is controlled by a multi-position switch 9 while the pumping means 4 is provided with a plurality of longitudinal interior ribs.
