Abstract

A covering for floors and like surfaces comprises a polyurethane containing ether or thioether linkages mixed with an inert filler in an amount of from 50% to 90% by weight of the covering, and consisting of particles the majority of which have a size within the range of 1,676 mm. to 0,124 mm. The floors can be covered by applying a mixture of a liquid polymeric ether or thioether containing in the molecule a plurality of groups having the formula -CXNH and at least two end groups having the formula -NCX, wherein X represents an oxygen atom or a sulphur atom, a cross-linking compound containing in the molecule at least two groups which are capable of reacting with -NCX groups and an inert filler in amount of 50% to 90% by weight of the composition and consisting of particles the majority of which have a size within the range 1,676 mm. to 0,124 mm. Preferably the cross-linking compound is dispersed in a volatile solvent such as methylene chloride or in an organic polyol such as a condensate of propylene oxide and glycerine and the solution is added to the polymeric ether or thioether and filler immediately prior to use. As polyols there can be used polyalkylene glycols, aryl or halogen-substituted polyglycols, polythioglycols, and polydiglycols, i.e. compounds of the formula H(OCH2CH2OCH2CH2OCH2)nOH and their sulphur analogoues where n is an integer having a value less than 50; also reaction products of propylene oxide with, for example, triethanolamine or triisopropanolamine; and propylene oxide and/or ethylene oxide reaction products of ethylene diamine, glycerol or trimethylol propane. The NCX group-containing polymer can have added a retarder, such as benzoyl chloride acid butyl phosphate or p-nitrobenzene sulphenyl chloride. Polyamines, amino-alcohols and carboxylic acids are specified as cross-linking agents. Suitable fillers are silica sand, quartz, diatomite, tripoli, flint, clays, mica, pumice, pumicite, Fuller's earth, asbestos, carbon black, and coke, charcoal, with which may be mixed barytes, gypsum, anhydrite and chromium pigments and iron silicates. In Example (1) 100 parts of a syrup, prepared by reacting toluene -2,4- and 2,6-diisocyanates with polypropylene glycol containing about 3% trimethylolpropane, is mixed with 700 parts of graded sand and quartz mixture, into which had been dispersed 11 parts of melted methylene-bis(o-chloroaniline). Other examples employ sand mixture on which has been dispersed (2) monoethanolamine; (3) pyridine and trimethylol propane. In Example (6) the polymer is a reaction product of toluene-2,4-and 2,6-diisocyanates with a polypropylene glycol derivative of ethylene diamine.
