Abstract

The surface characteristics of articles consisting of high-density molecularly oriented polyethylene having a crystallinity ratio of at least 60% are modified by subjecting the article to controlled surface oxidation, the reduction in the crystallinity ratio brought about thereby being not more than 20% of the initial value, reacting the surface-oxidized article with a saturated organic diisocyanate and reacting the resulting product with a polymer containing free hydroxyl and/or carboxyl groups, whereby the polymer becomes bonded to the surface of the polyethylene article through linkages derived from the diisocyanate. As modifications of this process: (i) the polymer containing hydroxyl and/or carboxyl groups may be separately reacted with an excess of the diisocyanate and the product so-formed is then reacted with the surface-oxidized polyethylene, and (ii) the surface-oxidized polyethylene may be reacted with the polymer containing hydroxyl and/or carboxyl groups in the presence of the surface-oxidized polyethylene. The surface oxidation of the polyethylene may be effected by means of potassium permanganate, sulphochromic acid, aqua regia, Caro's acid, ozone or high energy irradiation in the presence of oxygen or air. Organic diisocyanates specified are tolylene and diphenylmethane diisocyanates. Polymers specified for reaction with the diisocyanate-modified polyethylene are polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol and a polyester derived from diethylene glycol, maleic acid and phthalic anhydride, this last polymer being used in conjunction with styrene as a cross-linking agent and a mixture of benzoyl peroxide and dimethylaniline. The polyethylene used may be in the form of a film, fibre or fabric.
