In a sawing or trimming machine comprising a carriage 19, 20, 21, 22 which is displaced in one direction at one speed and is displaced in the opposite direction at the same or, alternatively, a different speed, the carriage carries a grooved pulley 47 disposed between and selectively engageable with either one of a pair of stationary belts 52, 53, and means are provided for rotating the pulley 47. The carriage is mounted on rollers 27 for reciprocation along fixed guides 17, 18 and it supports a swinging frame 30 pivoted about a spindle 29, and carries an electric motor 32, a gear-box 41, the pulley 47 and a circular saw blade 36. A roller 51 mounted on the swinging frame is adopted to roll along a support rail 48 which, by means of a handle 50, can be raised to bring the saw blade 36 to an operative position, shown in Fig. 1, or lowered in order to bring the saw blade 36 to a retracted position. In the raised position of the swinging frame, the inner portion 64 of the pulley 47 engages the upper belt 52 to cause a slow traverse of the carriage. A disc 56 mounted above the belt 52 ensures good frictional contact with the pulley 47. At the end of the working stroke, the rail 48 is lowered manually or automatically so as to retract the saw blade 36 and to engage the outer portion 65 of the pulley 47 with the lower belt 53, which is supported by rollers 60 thus causing the return movement of the carriage at a faster speed.
