Abstract

903,232. Continuous casting - machines. AMERICAN SMELTING & REFINING CO. Jan. 6, 1959 [March 26, 1958], No. 488/59. Class 83 (1). A method of continuously casting in a mould having a longitudinal taper converging towards its discharge end, which comprises casting and cooling at such rates as to form a crater shell extending a substantial longitudinal distance along the mould and positively pulling the congealed casting out of the mould to wedge the taper of the crater shell against the mould taper, thereby to plastically deform and draw said crater shell and to increase heat flow from the crater shell to the mould wall. The mould 13 is made of graphite with a compression-fitted reinforcing metal shell and is substantially as described in Specification 853,853, which is referred to, but has an internal taper which is greater than the taper of a corresponding mould operating at the same casting rate, so that the casting is " wire-drawn " as it is positively pulled through the mould. Other features of the apparatus, including the mounting of the mould for vertical reciprocation and of the ladle for tilting &c. are as described in the aforementioned Specification. The metal is poured into the mould through a stainless steel siphon 12, whose discharge end is provided with an overflow cup 42 to prevent loss of suction during a starting-up operation and entry of air into the discharge end of the tube. Surrounding the siphon tube 40 is a shroud 43 through which molten metal may be poured by overtilting the ladle 11, to melt out frozen metal in the siphon tube. The ladle may be swung in a horizontal plane so that the siphon tube may discharge into a slag pot while its discharge rate is regulated, whereafter it may be then returned so that the siphon cup 42 is registered over, and lowered into the mould. Specifications 853,854, 853,855, 903,233 and 903,234 also are referred to.
