902,771. Switching magnetic playback heads; television. BUSH & RANK CINTEL Ltd. Nov. 3, 1960 [Nov. 3, 1959], No. 37247/59. Class 40 (2). [Also in Groups XL (b) and XL (c)] Playback heads, scanning a signal recorded as successive transverse tracks on a magnetic tape, have their outputs switched successively into a common channel by a gating circuit in which a control signal is prevented from opening head gates in the absence of outputs from the respective heads. In Fig. 2, the heads 21-24 are connected to individual gates 29-32, the outputs of which are connected to a common terminal 33. When the first head 21 encounters a signal, the signal is rectified by rectifier 34 to provide a control signal which opens gate 29 to connect the first channel to the output. When the second head 22 encounters a signal a control signal is developed by rectifier 35 which closes gate 29 and opens gate 30, connecting the second channel to the output. In a modification of the arrangement of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 (not shown), in which the recorded signals are television signals, the rectifiers open further gates which allow a pulse generator to switch the signal gates during pulse blanking intervals. The rectifier circuits are arranged to respond to the carrier upon which the recorded signals are frequency modulated.
