Abstract

Water-soluble alkaloidal constituents of plants are extracted from disintegrated plant material by a process which comprises the steps of filling an extractant vessel to more than one half but less than completely full with the plant material, introducing into the vessel an alkaline aqueous extractant the pH of which is adjusted to substantially the known minimum solubility of said alkaloidal constituent in water, maintaining the level of the extractant above that of the plant material, passing through from below an immiscible organic solvent which is a known solvent for the alkaloidal material and which is of lower density than the aqueous extractant, drawing off from above the level of the aqueous extractant the solvent containing dissolved alkaloidal constituents, separating these constituents and returning the organic solvent to the extraction vessel. In a preferred feature of the process a minor proportion of the aqueous extractant is withdrawn from the vessel, emulsified with an equal volume of the organic solvent and the emulsion introduced into the base of the vessel at a rate substantially equal to the rate of withdrawal of the said proportion and the organic solvent containing the dissolved alkaloidal constituents. A suitable extraction apparatus for continuous operation is described and the process is illustrated by the extraction of raw morphine from ground poppy capsules. The preparation of cocaine from coca leaves and quinine from cinchona bark is also mentioned, the pH of the alkaline solution being between 9 and 10 in each instance.
