A solid fuel burning grate 4, is formed in three sections, each comprising perforated firebars 19 and abutting coolant tubes, supported on laminated flexible steel struts 13, reciprocated longitudinally as a unit by a connecting-rod 5 which is connected to a motor-driven eccentric, Fig. 2 (not shown). The fuel is fed on to a deadplate 6 from a hopper 1 under a movable gate 2 controlled by a worm-gear 3, whence it is moved along the grate by the reciprocating action, ash being discharged down the shoot 8. As shown in Fig. 4, the grate section comprises a castellated sheet of metal with longitudinal covers 4 welded between the castellations to cover the coolant ducts, through which water is passed from an in-pipe 22 to an exit pipe 23. Combustion air is pumped under pressure from a main duct 15 through pipes 25 into frustoconical chambers 16, 17, 18 attached to the underside of the grate, thence into the castellations 19, escaping horizontally through perforations 24. Air-tight flexible joints between the pipes 25 and the air-chambers comprise concentric annular cups 27, partly filled with oil, attached outside and level at the top with the ends of pipes 25, with space between the cups and the pipes for the necessary movement of the cylindrical tubes 26 attached to the small ends of the truncated cones.
