Abstract

22,955. Untiedt, H. Dec. 15. Smoke-consuming.-Water vapour generated in a trough b in the ashpit is passed, together with air, through a pipe e into a second hollow firebridge f, of the form shown in Fig. 3, whence it escapes through perforations at l, to mix with the products of combustion in the flue. The tube e is perforated to allow the escape of a portion of the water vapour and air into the space between the two firebridges. A portion of the vapour from the trough rises directly to the fire, the proportion being regulated by a plate i, which is supported in slots c so that it can be shifted backwards or forwards. Hydrogen may, it is stated, be produced by the dissociation of some of the water vapour. The upper part of the plate i is preferably hinged to the lower part, to allow the amount of air passing it to be regulated. A valve h is fitted in the tube e. Though described as applied to an internally-flued boiler, the invention may be adapted to the underneath furnaces of cylindrical and tubular boilers, and to the furnaces of boiling-pans, kilns, and the like.
