Abstract

Solid polycarbonate is recovered from solution in an inert solvent by heating the solution to volatilize solvent therefrom whilst retaining sufficient solvent with the polycarbonate-solvent mixture to keep the mixture liquid until a temperature at which the polycarbonate is flowable is reached and thereafter extruding the polycarbonate substantially free from solvent. The solution may be that obtained by phosgenation of a dihydric phenol, possibly in admixture with an aliphalic or cycloaliphalic dihydric alcohol, in a heterogenous liquid reaction medium in which one phase is an organic solvent such as a chlorinated aliphatic compound, dioxane, tetrahydrofurane, acetone, isobutyl ketone, benzene or toluene. In an example, a methylene chloride solution of a bisphenol-A polycarbonate is fed to an elongated heated chamber provided with twin screws and which terminates in an extrusion die. At the middle of the chamber, about 95% of the methylene chloride is removed in vapour form, and at point beyond this the balance of the methylene chloride is removed under vacuum. Finally, when the polycarbonate in the chamber is at about 288 DEG C., it is extruded through the die into spaghetti like rods which are chopped into granular particles.
