Packages, e.g. cigarette packages, are wrapped round and the tubular wrappings are heat-sealed while they continue movement through the wrapping machine. Driving elements 5 project from driving chains 4 and push packages 3 from a magazine M against wrapping material E which is thus folded in U-form round them. Fingers 28, pivoted on rotating arms 29 and carrying rollers 30 controlled by cam grooves 31, then advance the packages from the driving elements 5. Each driving element 5 carries a folder blade 6 and as the movement continues a cam rail 7 causes the blade to rise and fold over the lower flap of the wrapper at the trailing end of each package as it slides along an upper guide 2a. The ends of the flaps at the trailing face of the wrapper are folded in by rotary blades 32. A gripper 8 takes over the packet from the folder blade 6 and a spring 10a on the gripper 8 holds down the packet on a feedway 2 and the gripper 8 folds down the upper flap of the wrapper. A heating plate 8a on the gripper then heat-seals the tubular wrapping so formed. The further folding of tho side edges is effected in known manner. The gripper 8 is actuated by mechanisms which causes it to move in a closed path 9 whereby the heating plate 8a is in contact with the wrapping for as long as possible consistent with the movement continuing without interruption. The mechanism comprises an arm 10 on which the gripper 8 is mounted and which is pivoted to the end of a two-armed lever 12 and to end of a lever 19. The other end of the lever 12 swings on one end of the pivoted arm 14 and the lever is rocked by a crank disc 17 through a pin 16. The crank disc 17 is in the form of a gear wheel and meshes, via an idler pinion 22, with a crank disc 21. A variable speed drive is imparted by an eccentric gear wheel 24 which itself is driven by an eccentric gear wheel 26.
