Abstract
902,252. Tape-applying machines. PRIME MANUFACTURING CO. Jan. 13, 1960 [Jan. 27, 1959], No. 1314/60. Class 73. A tape-applying machine, e.g. for applying adhesive tape along the back seams of shoe uppers, comprises a work-supporting roll 12 co-operating with a stationary horn 14 acting as a seam guide, means for feeding the tape T to the work W, rolls 20, 26 co-operating with the roll 12 for pressing the tape along the work while feeding them through the machine and tape-cutting mechanism including a knife 56 and an actuating trigger 15, the latter being so located adjacent the roll 12 and horn 14 that it is moved forward to set the tape-cutting mechanism when the work W is presented to the machine and is automatically released to cause movement of the knife 56 to sever the tape after a predetermined advance of the work W. The trigger 15 is pivoted at 16 and in the operative forward position shown, engages the operating button B of a microswitch 17, causing a solenoid 35 to be de-energized and permitting upward movement of a plunger 34. The plunger 34 is connected by a link 33 with an arm of a pivoted spider 32 which is thus moved clockwise about the pivot 30 by the action of a spring 31. This causes a forked guide or hold-down 50 to move downwardly from a raised position, Fig. 2 (not shown), to a position adjacent the roll 12. The knife 56 projects from a cam 47 pivoted at 21, the cam 47 having a slot 49 engaged by a cam follower on a downwardlyextending arm 48 of the spider 32. Thus clockwise movement of the spider 32 causes anticlockwise movement of the cam 47 and the knife 56 is moved upwardly and rearwardly into the position shown. When the trailing edge of the work W releases the trigger 15, the solenoid 35 is energized, the spider 32 moves anti-clockwise, the cam 47 moves clockwise and the knife 56 is swung into the path of the tape T to sever it while the guide 50 rises to its inoperative position. The tape T is led to the machine between guide rolls located in the upper end of an arm 62 and then passes through a wire guide 63, between guide rolls 64 and downwardly through a flat tape guide 39. The machine includes automatic means for advancing the tape to the bite of the feed roll 26 when the trigger 15 is tripped and the hold down presser 50 brought into its operative position.
