This invention relates to a machineto apply bands to bundles.
My principal object is to provide a machine that will supply a predetermined length of band material for a bundle, and after the band is wrapped around the bundle in the form of a loop, in response to a single movement of the operator, will join two portions of the band together making a fiat joint in the loop itself, then sever the main supply of the band material therefrom, and automatically present a said predetermined length of the band material to wrap the next bundle with. Another object is to provide such a machine to do this wrapping with a band made of material that presents a uniformly good appearance, that is strong, with the minimum use Of-labor and time; and, when embodying one form of joining means, does not involve any eX- pense for adhesive or staples. A further object is to make it possible for the operator to simply pull out some eXtra band material in addition to the predetermined length from the supply whenever the size of the bundle so requires.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawings and specification. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and. modifications, and, therefore, I am not to be limited to said disclosure; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claims.

, The band or strip` oftape I0 is drawn from supply roll 5 through tape guides II,V and I2 by means of feed rollsI3 and I4. Guides Il and I2, shown as made of sheet metal bent U-shaped in cross section with the closed ends of the Us toward the inner surfaces of the side frames, are adjustably mounted yby means of friction spring clips I4A riveted to them and supported and frictionally located on two spacers 3. The guides II and I2 extend forwardly past rotatable feed rolls I3 and I4 to within a small clearance of knife 2 I. To facilitate the adjustment of guides II-and I2 graduated handles 11a are prof vided similar to those shown and described for adjustment of plates `I5 and 1 and similarly mounted. l
The drive feed roll I4 is carried on a shaft I5 preferably journaled in ball bearings I5A, the outer races of which are mounted in fixed position on the side frames I and 2. The drive feed roll I4 is preferably provided with a rubber surface for frictional driving contact with the tape I0. Feed roll I3 is carried on a shaft I6 preferably journaled in ball bearings |6A, the outer races of which are mounted on side frames I and 2 in vertical slots I1 and I8 so as to be movable vertically. The ball bearings IBA are pressed vertically downward by suitable springs I9 so the tape will be nipped between rolls I3 and I4 with -sumcient force to feed the tape but capable of yielding sufiiciently to permit the operator to raise roll I3 away from roll |4`enough to insert the tape when threading the machine. Said springs I9 are so formed to provide a stop portion |9a and a bendISb. Said bends |917 force said ball bearings I6a` downwardly when the said rolls I3 and I4 are in contact, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. When said rolls are separated to insert band material said bends IQb hold them separated by forcing ball bearings I 6a upwardly against said stop I 9a.
Drive feed roll I4 on its `shaft I5 is rotated preferably by gear teeth 22 cut into the shaft I5 in mesh with gear 23 rotatably mounted on fixed spacer 24. Also rotatably mounted on spacer rod 24 beside gear 23 is sprocket 25 on the hub of which are cut ratchet teeth 26. Sprocket 25 and gear 23 are located laterally between the shoulder 26A of spa-cer 24 and boss 21 of side frame I. Gear 23 isrotated by pawl 28 mounted on stud 29 fixed to gear 23 pressed into engagement with ratchet teeth 26 of sprocket 25 by ratchet spring 30.
Sprocket 25 is rotated by chain 3| which is pulled by tension spring 32 which is anchored to spacer rod 33 fixed to the side frames I and 2. Chain 3| extends from spring 32 part Way around sprocket 25 downwardly to the vupper end of a rod 62 which is the upper rod of a turnbuckle 63, the lower rod 64 of which is pivotably attached by pin 61 to a slide 65 mounted on a lever 34 shown pivoted on a floor bracket 34A at a pin 34B. This slide 65 may be slid along lever 34 to alter its distance from the lever fulcrum pin 34B in floor bracket 34A. Slide 65 is provided with a clamping screw 66 to holdit set in the desired position on the lever 34, and an index 66A to indicate its position relative to the scale 66B is provided on the slide 65. Scale 66B is numbered preferably to indicate the length of tape feed in inches resulting from its position.
Lever 34 is connected to and operated by a pin 1| projecting from a pedallever 12 opposite a boss 13 engaging a slot 14 in lever 34. Lever 12 is fulcrumed in floor bracket 15 at pin 16. Lever 12 is formed into a foot pedal at 58 at one end. This double lever arrangement ,is used to increase the angular movement of lever 34, carrying said slide 65 in response to-a given amount of movement applied to pedal 58. 0f course, this yobject could be attained by other means, such as a single lever, in which event the 'operating force would be applied directlytothe lever carrying the slide 65.
To present tape I0 at a point for wrapping around a bundle it is fed through guides and I2 by feed rolls I3 and I4 thence between and beyond fixed cutting knife 2| and swinging cutting knife 2| A.Vv Fixed cutting knife 2| is located above the path of the tape and extends transversely of said path with its cutting edge in the plane of its surface farther from the feed rolls I3 and I4. Knife 2| is shown attached by screws 35 to cross frame 36 which in turn is attached to side frames I and 2 by screws 31.
Swinging knife 2IA is located below the path lof the tape being fastened to swinging knife holder 38 by screws 39. Swinging knife 2IA has its cutting Iedge in the plane of its surface nearest to the feed rolls I3 and I4 to cooperate with the cutting 'edge of the fixed knife 2|. Swinging knife holder 38 is pivoted on stud 40 threaded into cross frame 36. The swinging knife holder is provided with a spring 4| to hold the cutting edge side of the swinging knife 2IA `=close against the cutting edge side of the fixed knife 2|. Swinging knife 2IA is provided with an upwardly projecting portion 42 extending from the end of the knife 2 IA at a point between the path of the tape I8 and the fulcrum pin 40. This projection 42 extends upwardly far enough to overlap knife 2| even when knife 2IA is at its lowest position, thus preventing swinging knife 2IA from being forced into interference with fixed knife 2| by the action of the spring 4|. Said spring 4| is attached at one end to the swinging knife holder 38 by screws 43 tapped into the side of the holder 38, and at its other end it engages a slot in holder 38. The middle portion of spring 4| presses against the outer surface of screw 40.
The end of the swinging knife holder 38 furthest removed from the knife is formed as shown in Figure 3 to engage and be operated by the projecting end of pin 44 when pin 44 approaches the bottom of its stroke. The different positions of said pin 44 during the cutting operation are indicated by dot and dash lines in said Figure 3.
Tape I0 is fed between the fixed 4and swinging cutting knives preferably to the extent needed to give the length of tape necessary to reach around the bundle being banded and to overlap on itself as at IUa at the tape crimping device or stapling device, later described.
The tape crimping device consists of two pairs of hardened and polished steel crimping dies, each pair comprising one fixed die 45 and one movable die 45a. The fixed dies are located above the path of the tape and are recessed into cross frame 36 and secured therein by upsetting the metal of cross frame 36 around them. The construction of these dies including their ser rations 45h in the contacting surfaces is shown in large scale view in Figure 5 of the drawings.
The movable dies 45a are located below the path of the tape and are recessed into equalizer 46 and secured thereto by upsetting the metal of the equalizer 46 around them. Equalizer 46 is semi-circular in shape to match a similarly shaped recess in a lcrimping lever 41. Crimping lever 41 is pivoted on axle 48 carried in holes in the dependent sides of cross frame 36. Attached to crimping lever 41 near its crimping die end and extending downward from it is spring 48A with its'lower end secured to side frame 2. At 69 is an open ended slot in side frame 36 through which the tape is fed and 'from which the completed band is removed. The end of crimping lever 41 opposite from the crimping die end is forked and carries on an axle 49 the four-sided cam member 5I). Recessed into cross frame 36 immediately above cam member 50 is steel plate 50A and rubber disk 50B located so as to take the reaction of cam 50. Pivoted on pawl 573 spring pressed by spring 54 against the ratchet notches cut in the edge of cammember 50.
The end of lever 5| opposite from the cam end carries projecting pin 44 in a hole drilled through it. Also carried by this pin 44 is the clevis 55 into which is screwed rod 5B supplied with turnbuckle 18 connected in turn with rod 19. The lower end of rod 19 is looped around stud 80 which is screwed into strap 8|. Strap 8| is attached by screws 82 to lever 34.
As previously stated the rear end of lever 34 is fulcrumed on floor bracket 34A. The longitudinal center line of lever 34 is approximately horizontal and is located vertically below sprocket 25 in the plane through the middle of the width of the sprocket 25. through chain 3I normallyl holds lever 34 up against pedal lever stop 6|.
Surrounding the three sides of the cross frame 36 other than the feed mechanism side is shelf 68 located with its upper surface just a trifle below the lower edge of slot 69 in cross frame 36. The' tape I8 is fed across this shelf 68 and the bundle to be banded is placed upon the tape I0.
The operator passes the tape around the bundle and introduces the end of the tape into the crimping mechanism by the help of the deflector 10 which is attached to cross frame 36 by screws 35.
Having described an illustrative construction of the mechanism embodying my invention the sequence and manner of operation will now be described.
To put the machine into operation cover 51 is printed side is down if printed tape is used sov as to cause the printed side. of the band to be visible when itsurrounds the bundle. The roll of tape is next put in place against the rolls 9 and located laterally midway between side frames I and 2 by slidably adjusting plates 6 and 1 and their attached clips 8 frictionally engaging the spacers 3 by means of handles 11.
Guides II and I2 and their attached spring friction clips i4A are slidably adjusted on spacers 3, by means of handles 11A, to guide tape I0 midway of the side frames I and 2 to line up with roll 5. Roll I3 is pushed downward into operating position to allow its spring I9 to press it against roll I4.
Next slide 65 is adjusted on lever 34 so that its index is opposite the number on the scale on lever 34 that indicates the number of inches of tape desired for the band to be made, and
it is clamped in this position by clamp screw 66.'.
To cut the tape I0 back to a point opposite knives 2| and 2|a, so that a correct start may be made, the pedal 58 is depressed by the operators foot from its normal or upmost position to cause the swinging knife 2IA to cut olf the small end Ib of the tape which in threading up had been inserted slightly beyond the near edg of shelf 66.
Spring 32 acting' from depressing pedal 58 because pedal lever 12 carrying pin 1I is activated thereby. Pin 1I engaging slot 14 in lever 34 in turn depresses lever 34. Attached to lever 34 by screws 82 is strap 8| carrying stud 80 around which is looped the lower end of rod 19. As lever 34 is depressed rod 19 follows carrying turnbuckle 18, into the upper end of which is screwed the lower. end of rod 56. As rod 56 drops it carries with it clevis 55 which is screwed onto itsupper end. Clevis 5511s pivotab-ly connected to lever 5I by means of pin 44 projecting into the path of the swinging knife holder 38. As clevis`55 drops pin 44 strikes swinging knife'holder 38 near the end of its stroke and causes swinging knife 2IA to raise past fixed knife 2| and cut the tape.
'Ihe operator now removes her foot from pedal 58 thus permitting spring 32 to contract in length pulling with it chain 3|. The movement of chain 3| rotates sprocket 25 carrying ratchet teeth 26 on its hub.A Pawl 28 engaging ratchet teeth 26 and pivoted on stud 29 in turn rotates gear 23 to which stud 29 is secured. Gear 23 meshing with teeth 22 cut into shaft I5 of drive feed roll I4, causes vfeed roll I4 to rotate and deliver the required length of banding material across shelf 68.
The machine is now ready for use.
The operator places a bundle on the tape, picks up the end of the tape, passes it around the bundle and inserts the end of the tape between the deflector 10 andthe cross frame 36 between the two pairs of crimping dies and 45a about an inch or slightly more than the length of the crimping dies.
Pedal 58 is now depressed carrying with it pedal 12 and, by means of pin 1|, lever 34. As previously described, lever 34 thru rods 19 and 56, clevis 55 and pin 44 rotates lever 5|.` As lever 5I swings it carries attached to it stud 52 supporting pawl 53. Pawl 53 in turn engages ratchet teeth cut in cam and causes it to turn.
Cam 58 is pivoted on pin 49 carried by crimping lever 41. to crimping lever 41 holds cam 50 against steel platev 50A. Steel plate 50A is backed up by a rubber disk 58B which acts as a compression spring. As one of the high spots on cam 56 is brought into contact with plate 56A by the rotation of cam 5I) the cam center is forced away from plate` 50A carrying its end of crimping lever 41. with it. This forces the opposite end of lever 415 upward carrying with it equalizer 46- and the movable dies 45a. The two thicknesses of ther brand material are thus squeezed between the fixed and movable dies. The dies are soshaped that the libres of one thickness of band` material are forced into such intimate contact with the bres of the other banding material is used, thus acting as a safety device to avoid development of excessive pressure at the dies with resulting weakening of the joint and to avoid excessive strain with permanent distortion of the. parts.
It will be observed` that the parts are so de-v This motion of swinging knife 2IA results` The tension spring 48A attached signed and related that the crimping dies 45 and 45A are separated when pedal 58 is held in normal position at the top of its stroke by spring 32, and are forced tightly together approximately at the middle of its stroke andare again widely separated at the end or completion of its stroke in one direction. Of course, this result could be attained by using a cam with a different number of lobes than the number shown and changing the angle of oscillation of lever 5| to maintain it at a little more than 360 degrees divided by the number of lobes n the cam.

58, as described above, pin 44, carried by lever 5| strikes moving knife holder 38 near the end of the stroke of said pin and moves said holder 38 downwardly to the end of its stroke thus forcing the opposite end of holder 38 upwardly, thereby carrying moving knife 2IA past fixed knife 2| and separating the band B so formed from the roll of banding material.
Holding her foot on pedal 58 to keep the crimping dies separated the operator removes the bundle with its band on it from the machine by sliding it sidewise on the shelf 68 while the band slides out of the slot 69.
Removing her ioot now `from pedal 58 the same length of band material is again fed across table 68 ready for the next bundle to be placed on it.
In Figure 9 of the drawings I show the movable part of a well known stapling device S which is used in place of said crimping dies, being pivoted at 85 to said table 68, and operated while in an inverted position, as shown. Said shelf 68 is provided with an opening 68a, immediately above which is an anvil 86 secured by screws 81 to said table 68. Said lever 41 when operated as previously described actuates a plunger 88 of said stapling device S opposite said opening 68a to thereby drive a staple 90 through the overlapping portions Illa of said band material I0.
Should more than the predetermined length of band material l0 be needed the operator may` pull out the extra material needed because pawl 28 will click over ratchet teeth 26 permitting the feed rolls I3 and I4 to turn even though sprocket 25 remains stationary.
What I claim is:
1. A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feed fibrous band material, operable means adapted to distort and thereby interjoin two portions of said band material, operable means spaced from and independent vof said joining means to sever said band material between said joined portions and the remainder of said material, and operable mechanism connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said feeding means, joining means and severing means.
2. A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feed fibrous band material such as paper or cardboard, operable means adapted to join two portions of said band material together that are overlapped, operable means to sever said band material between said joined portions and the remainder of said material spaced laterally from the point Where said portions overlap towards said feed means and mechanism operably connected to said feeding means, joining means and severing means having movable lever means operatively connected to said joining means, feeding means and severing means embodying connecting parts which are adapted to be actuated by an independentmovement and thereby operate said joining means, severing means and feeding means progressively in the order named.
3. A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feed band material, operable means to join two portions of said band material together, operable means to sever said band material between said joined portions and the remainder of said band material, and operable mechanism connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said feeding means, joining means and cutting means embodying movable' lever means adapted upon actuation to operate said mechanism, and movable adjustable means connected with said mechanism embodying a slide movably connected with said lever means and adapted to limit the movement of said operable mechanism that actuates said feeding means and thereby determine the length of said band material to be fed when said mechanism is actuated.
4. A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feed band material, operable means to join two portions of said band material together embodying a movable member, operable means to sever said band material between said joined portions and the remainder of said material embodying a movable cutting member that is in substantially the same horizontal plane during the severing operation as said joining means movable member is during the joining operation, and operable mechanism connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said joining means, operable means connected to said severing means and to said operable mechanism adapted to be actuated by said mechanism after said joining means has been actuated to thereby actuate said severing means, and operable instrumentalities connected to said feed means and to said operable mechanism adapted to be actuated by said mechanism after said severing means has been actuated to thereby actuate said feed means.
5. A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feed band material, operable means to join two portions of said band material together in an endless loop, said joining means being so positioned with relation to said two portions of said band material as to join said portions in the said loop itself, operable means to sever said band material between said joined portions and the remainder of said material, and operable mechanism connected to and. adapted to actuate said joining means having a movable lever adapted to move in a positive stroke and return and to actuate said joining means on its positive stroke, operable means connected to said severing means and to said operable mechanism adapted to be actuated by said positive stroke of said lever to thereby actuate said severing means, and operable instrumentalities connected to said feed means and to said operable mechanism adapted to be actuated upon said return stroke of said lever to thereby actuate said feed means.
6. A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feed band material, operable means to join two portions of said band material together, operable means to sever said band material between said joined portions and the remainder of said material, and mechanism operably connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said feeding means, joining means and 'said4 lever meansV actuates said feed roll to desevering means, said joining means embodying two members adapted to coact with each other to thereby join said portions together, said severing means embodying two cutting blades adapted to coact with each other, said mechanism embodying a cam, and a movable lever adapted to directly receive the primary operating impulse operably connected thereto adapted when actuated to move in one direction and return, and adapted in its first movement to actuate said cam and mechanism to cause one said joining member to move towards the other and afterwards during said first movement to cause said moved joining member to move away from the said other.
7. A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feed band material, operable means to join two portions of said band material together, operable means to sever said band material between said joined portions and the remainder of said material, and mechanism operably connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said feeding means, joining means and severing means, said joining means embodying two members adapted to coact with each other to thereby join said portions together, said severing means embodying two `cutting blades adapted to coaot with each other, said feeding means embodying two roll members adapted to coact with each other, said mechanism embodying a movable lever adapted when actuated by the operator to move in one direction and return and adapted in its first movement to move one said joining member towards the other and adapted during said first movement to thereafter move said joining member away from the said other. said mechanism embodying a movable chain and a tension springconnected thereto and adapted to be pulled. by movement of said chain, said chain and spring being movably connected to a said feed roll and to said lever and adapted upon said return movement to cause said feed roll to rotate to thereby deliver a supply of said band material for use.
8. A machine of the class described, comprising operable means to feed band material, operable means to join two portions of said band material together in an endless loop, operable means to sever said band material between said joined portions and the remainder of said material, mechanism operably connected t and adapted upon actuation to actuate said feeding means, joining means and severing means, and means to support a bundle to be banded directly above said joining means, said joining means embodying stapling means, all of said severing means being spaced rearwardly of that portion of said supporting means that is adapted to support a bundle, and part of said severing means being higher than said supporting means portion.
9. A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feed band material having a feed roll member, operable means to join two portions of said band maerial together, operable means to sever said band material between said joined portions and the remainder of said material, and operable mechanism connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said feeding means, joining means and severing means, said mechanism embodying movable lever means adapted to be actuated by the operator of said machine, a slide member movably mounted on said lever means and connected with said mechanism, means operably connected with said feed roll and said lever means whereby actuation of liverla portionof said band material for use in wrapping around a bundle, the length of which is determined by the position of said slide member on said lever means.
10. A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feedband material,vop erable means to join two portions of said band material together, operable means to sever said band material between said joined portions and therremainder of saidmaterial having a movable knife member and holder therefor, and operable mechanism connected .to and ad-apted uponv actuation to actuate said feeding means, joining means and severing means, said mechanism embodying a movable lever adapted to be actuated by the operator of said machine, another movable lever connected to said rst lever, a movable rod connected to said second lever, a third movable lever carrying a pin projecting therefrom, said knife member holder and pin being in the same path of movement whereby upon contactual movement of said pin and said knife member the latter is actuated to cutting position to thereby sever said tape. f
ll. A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feed band material, operable means to join two portions of said band material together, operable means to sever said band material between said joined portions and 'the remainder of said material having a movable knife member and holder therefor, and operable mechanism connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said feeding means, joining means and severing means, said mechanism embodying a movable lever adapted to be actuated by the operator of said machine, connecting means operably connected to said lever, a pin carried by and projecting from said connecting means, said knife member holder and pin being in the same path of movement and normally spaced from each other and so positioned that movement of said pin in said path to a predetermined point brings it into contact .with said knife holder thereby actuating said knife member to cutting position.

A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feed band material having a feed roll, operable means to join two portions of said band maerial together, operable means to sever said band material between said joined portion-s and the remaider of said material having a movable knife member and holder therefor, and operable mechanism connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said feeding means, joining means and severing means, said mechanism embodying movable lever means adapted to be actuated by the operator of said machine, a movable rod connected to said lever means, a clevis connected to said rod, another movable lever, a pin carried by said other movable lever and operably connecting said other movable lever to said clevis, said knife member holder and pin being in the same path of movement whereby upon contact with each other said knife member is actuated to cutting position to thereby sever said tape, a spring normally holding said lever means in a predetermined position, and adapted to be actuated by movement of said lever means, means adapted to be actuated by contraction of said spring operably connecting said spring-and said feed roll whereby said feed roll is adapted to deliver a portion of said band material for use in wrapping around a bundle.
13. A machine of the class described, comprising means to guide band material as itis drawn into position for use, means `to support a bundle to .be banded, operable means to join two portions of said band material together inan endless loop while said bundle is supported by said supporting means embodying a movable member and a fixed member `adapted to coact therewith, operable means to sever said band material between said joined portions and the Aremainder of `said material, said fixedmember being so posi- .tioned as toalso provide support for a bundle to Ybe banded directly above said movable mem- .ber, mechanism operably connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said joining` .means and severing means, said severing means being rearwardly of said movable and fixed -members and spaced laterally from the portion .of said supporting means that is yadapted to support said bundle, and being adapted to be actuated by said mechanism after the joining operation has been. performed.

A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feed fibrous band material, operable means to join two portions of said I, -band material together embodying a member 4normally above said material and a member normally below said material, operable means independent of and spaced from said joining means to sever said band material between said joined ,Y portions and the remainder of said material embodying a severing member above said material and a severing member below said material, operable mechanism connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said feeding means, joining means and severing means, and a deiiector positioned laterally adjacent said joining vmeans above said material and extending to a point adjacent said severing member that is above said material, said defiector extending away from said joining means towards said latter-mentioned severing member upwardly and -outwardly whereby the space between said joining means and said deflector increases from the bottom of said deiiector upwardly.
15. A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feed fibrous band material, operable means adapted to distort and thereby interjoin two portions of said band material,
operable means spaced from and` independent of said joining means to sever said band material between said joined portions and the remainder of said material, and operable mechanism connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said feeding means, joining means and severing means, said mechanism embodying instrumentalities adapted to directly effect` actuation of said severing means and other instrumentalities adapted to directly effect actuation of said Vjoining means.
16. A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feed fibrous band mate-I Cil Wagences 117. A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feed fibrous band material, operable means adapted to distort and thereby interjoin two portions of said band material, operable means movableindependently of said joining means to sever said band material between said joined portions and the remainder of saidmaterial, and operable mechanism connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said feeding means, joining means and severing means, said mechanism embodying instrumentalities adapted upon actuation of said mechanism to directly cause actuation of said severing means and other instrumentalities adapted upon actuation of said mechanism to directly cause actuation of said joining means, said mechanism embodying parts so operably connected that said joining means is operated before said severing means severs said material.

A machine of the class described comprising operablemeans to feed iibrous band material, operable means .adapted to distort and thereby interjoin two portions of said band material, operable knife means spaced from and movable independently of said joining means to seversaid band material between said joined portions and the remainder of said material, said knife means embodying a movable knife and holding means therefor, and operable mechanism connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said feeding means, joining means and knife means, said mechanism embodying instrumentalities adapted to directly cause actuation of said holding means and other instrumentalities adapted to directly cause actuation of said joining means.

A machine of the class described comprising operable means to feed fibrous band material, operable means adapted to distort and thereby interjoin two portions of said band material embodying two mating dies havingspaced serrations therein, said dies being so operably positioned that the serrations in one die are opposite the spaces between the serrations in the other die, operable means to sever said band material between said joined portions and the remainder of said material, and operable mechanism connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said feeding means, joining means -and severing means to thereby cause the said serrations in one said die to enter said spaces in the other said die.

A machine of the class described compris- 'ing operable means to feed fibrous band material, operable means adapted to distort and thereby interjoin two portions of said band-'material'embodying a pair of V-shaped tooth members so positioned that the apexes of said V- shaped tooth members are opposite the spaces lbetweenthe apexes of the oither V-'shaped tooth members, operable means to sever said band material between said joined portions and the remainder of said material, and operable mechanism connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuatesaid feeding means, joining means and severing means to thereby causev the teeth of a said V-shaped tooth 'member to enter the spacesbetween'the apexes of the other1 V-shaped tooth member.

A machine of the class described compris- ,ing operable means to press together and inter- `join two portions of band material embodying a movable member,'operable means embodying a stationary member to cut said band material between said joined portion and the remainder of said band material, operable mechanism connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said joining means and'cuttng means, means to hold a supply of materials, and means to guide the leading edge of said material to cause it to be presented to said joining and severing means, said guiding means being attached to Said stationary member, and means to support a bundle terial between said Vjoined portions and the remainder of said material, and mechanism operably connected to and adapted upon actuation to actuate said feeding means, joining means and severing means, said joining means embodying two die members operable relative to each other, said severing means embodying two independent cutting members operable relative to each other and spaced rearwardly of said die members and the portion of said bundle supporting means that is adapted to support a bundle, one of said cutting members extending higher than said latter mentioned portion, said feeding means embodying two feed rolls opposite each other and rearwardly of said cutting members. f
