901,769. Extruding. COMPAGNIE DU FILAGE DES METAUX ET DES JOINTS CURTY. March 21, 1960 [March 26, 1959], No. 9952/60. Class 83 (4). A granular lubricant is applied to an inside and/or outside surface of a hot extrusion billet which is rotated about its axis to distribute the lubricant. A heated billet is collected from a conveyer 1, Fig. 2, by a pivoted arm 2 and transferred into a drum 3 rotated by rollers 5. Glass powder is fed into the drum from a hopper 6 and as the billet rotates with the drum this powder is distributed over its inner and outer surfaces. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the billet 10 is rotated directly by horizontal rollers 11, 12, whilst glass powder is fed from a hopper 13 on to the outer surface of the rotating billet. The lubricant is also supplied to the inside of the billet by the method described in Specification 901,770. Graphite may be used instead of glass powder. A specific example is given for the extrusion of stainless steel. Specification 607,285 also is referred to.
