The invention comprises t-alcohols of the formula: <FORM:0901700/IV (b)/1> in which R stands for a polyalkyl methyl radical which contains at least 3 carbon atoms and Ph represents a phenyl radical which contains a halogen atom in the 3 and/or 4-position or salts thereof, and pharmaceutical preparations thereof, and a process for the preparation thereof by reacting a ketone of the formula: <FORM:0901700/IV (b)/2> with an organo-metallic reagent of the formula: <FORM:0901700/IV (b)/3> wherein one of the radicals X, Y and Z stands for Ph, another for R and the third for the radical <FORM:0901700/IV (b)/4> the radicals Ph and R having the above meanings and M+ represents the positively charged ion of a metal of the Ia Group of the Periodic Table or the positively charged ion of the formula Met-Hal+ in which Met represents a bivalent metal of the II Group of the Periodic Table and Hal stands for halogen and if desired converting the resulting salt into the free base and/or converting a free base into a salt thereof and/or separating a resultant mixture of isomers into individual isomers. The preparation of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-methyl-1-(3-pyridyl)- propanol is described. The above compositions having an adrenal inhibiting effect, are administered enterally or parenterally in capsules, tablets, dragees, solutions, suspensions and emulsions. 4-Chloro-phenyl 3-pyridyl ketone is obtained by treating nicotinic acid with thionyl chloride followed by condensation of the product with chlorobenzene.
