In a die-and-plunger type box erecting machine, a box blank is moved from a magazine to a position beneath the plunger where it is arrested, partially folded, has adhesive under pressure applied to the appropriate areas and pressure applied to the erected carton while still in the die. The adhesive is applied in a measured quantity by a pump and is applied in one of several patterns. The plunger is actuated by mechanism as described in Specification 901,594. A bar 40, Figs. 1 and 5, carrying suction cups 95 removes a blank from the magazine, carries it to, and releases it beneath, the plunger 105 where faces 113 of the adhesive applying devices partially fold extensions on one pair of side flaps. Devices 125 grip the blank in position. The bar 40 is actuated by a motor 12, Fig. 1, via drive means 16, 18, rod 37, bellcrank lever 38 and arm 41, the other end of the bar 40 being actuated by similar means. The plunger is actuated by a bar 33 carried by a crosshead 30 moved up and down by a rod 29, levers 25, 26 and the drive means 16, 18. Means as described in Specification 901,593 for applying pressure to the glued extensions comprises members urged together by a pneumatically operated piston and cylinder, cams on a shaft 23, Fig. 1, controlling the admission of compressed air to the cylinder. The adhesive is supplied, as described in Specification 901,592 by a pump 182, Fig. 16, actuated by a cam 170 on the shaft 23. The cam causes a platform 163 to tilt so that a carriage 174 will strike an actuator 181 of the pump. The carriage has operative and inoperative positions and is moved from one position to the other by a piston and cylinder 176, 177. A control valve 186 connected to the blank feeding mechanism ensures that the carriage is in its operative position only when a blank B is beneath the plunger. Stripper fingers protrude from the die walls and engage slots 107 in the plunger to ensure that an erected blank is not withdrawn by the plunger and a spring loaded ball on each of the front and rear faces of the die bow the corresponding box sides inwardly so that the box is ejected by the next blank to be forced in by the plunger.
