A packing element for a thermal regenerator is of cylindrical shape either solid or hollow and the circular periphery at each end of the element is caused to merge into a diametrally extending terminal edge having a length substantially equal to half the length of the circular periphery. Ceramics or a heavy metal such as lead are mentioned as suitable materials for solid elements. When made in a hollow form, sheet aluminium may be used. The two end edges of an element may be parallel or at rightangles to one another.
