Abstract
900,714. Seaming. BLISS CO., E. W. Feb. 17, 1961 [Feb. 18, 1960], No. 5964/61. Class 83 (4). A can body seamer having a stationary frame 11, a metal forming member 19 and a connecting rod 17 for supporting the metal forming member, comprises a rotary member 27 connected to the connecting rod for imparting oscillatory movement thereto, the metal forming member executing forming operations on successive metal workpieces as the connecting rod oscillates and first and second guide members 30, 31, each having a pivotal connection to the frame 11 but on opposite sides of the connecting rod 17 and each having a pivotal connection to the connecting rod. The frame also supports a forming mandrel 12 and a clamp 13 for the can body blanks 14, the clamp also acting as an anvil to take the impact of the bumper steel 19 during the side seam formation. The guide and stabilizer member 30 is pivoted at one end 32 to the frame and at the other end 33 to a lever 34 fixed to a cross-head 18 rotatably mounted on a shaft 35 carried by the upper end of the connecting rod 17. The other guide member 31 has one end pivoted to the frame at 38 and the other end mounted on the shaft 35. In operation, can body blanks are supplied to the mandrel by feed means (not shown) where they are clamped in position and folded around the mandrel by wing clamps (not shown) to interlock the hooks 15a and 15b on the blank. These operations are carried out in timed relation to rotation of the crank-shaft 27 to enable the bumper steel to flatten the engaged hooks and form the side seam 40, Fig. 4. The guide members 30, 31 ensure that the bumper steel is moving vertically with substantially no horizontal component of motion at the moment of impact and the two members also relieve the frame of the shock load which is equally divided between them.
