In a capacitor comprising a continuous spiral of dielectric material having a plurality of metal foil strips disposed at spaced intervals between adjacent turns thereof; the lengths of the metal foil strips are automatically measured and severed from a continuous roll of foil so that each strip is sufficiently long for substantially one turn in. the dielectric spiral, the length being dependent upon the position of the strip in the spiral. Paper strip is fed from a roll B over guide rollers C on to a mandrel D, and foil strips are immersed, from rollers G, between adjacent turns of the paper strip. The foil strips are severed from a continuous roll A by a guillotine E. A pinch bar F grips the foil and moves towards a stop H, the position of which is determined by a follower J in contact with the capacitor winding on mandrel D; contact of pinch bar F with the stop H operates the guillotine E thereby severing the required length of foil determined in accordance with the radius of the capacitor roll. The pinch bar E continues its movement to feed the severed strip to rollers G from whence it is fed to the capacitor roll.
