Abstract

900,331. Temperature-responsive actuating- elements. GERDTS, W. F., and GERDTS, H. R., [trading as GERDTS KOMM.-GES., GUSTAV F.]. Sept. 9, 1960 [Sept. 15, 1959], No. 31184/60. Class 64 (2). A bimetallic temperature responsive device for use in a flowing medium, for example as a valve actuator in the condensation drain of a steam main, consists of a pair or a stack of pairs of bimetallic disc elements, each element of a pair consisting of a higher expansion component 1 made of a corrosion resistant steel and a lower expansion component 2 of non-corrosion resistant steel, the components being spot welded or rolled seam welded together with the low expansion components of each pair of elements facing each other, the elements of a pair when heated by the flowing medium doming in opposite directions to provide a sealed cavity 3 therebetween, whereby only the corrosion resistant steel is exposed to the flowing medium whilst the non-corrosion resistant steel is only contacted by stilled medium, the rate of corrosion of the inner surface being thereby much reduced. The component 1 may be made of 18/8% chrome-nickel steel whilst the component 2 of 30-36% nickel steel. The edge zones of the elements and the interiors of valve stem bores 9, when provided, may be protected by galvanically applied coatings 6, 10 respectively. Alternatively, corrosion resistant rings may be applied over the edges of each element or may bind together the adjoining edges of each pair of elements. In a further modification the edge of one element is rounded to engage with sealing contact a depression formed along the edge of the coacting element.
