Abstract
900,283. Brushes. OSBORN MANUFACTURING CO. May 17, 1960, No. 17410/60. Class 19. A brush element comprises a support 7 and brush material secured thereto, e.g. by means of a retaining wire 6 around which is doubled the brush material and comprising a plurality of paralled brush material strands 28 joined together in a generally flat band 27 of flexible plastics material. The plastics material coats the strands to a thickness approximately one half the diameter of the strands and may conform to the shape of the strands, e.g. flat or oval. An element thus formed may have abrasive and/or a layer of fabric secured to the strand ends. and the plastics material respectively. The channel-shaped support 7 may be wound helically to form a rotary brush or circularized to form a cup-shaped brush or mounted, on a rotary member parallel ,to the axis of rotation or, as shown in Fig. 11, form long lead helices. In another embodiment, Fig. 12, a layer of brush material strands 20 having plastics material. bonded to the centre portion thereof has the plastics material gripped between elongated stem members 25: Additional layers 21, 22 may be placed diagonally of layer 20 and likewise gripped by the stem members 25. The stem members 25 may be twisted to form a helical brush. In another embodiment. Fig. 29, a paint brush is formed by securing the plastic coated ends 39 of brush material strands 40 to the head of a T-piece 41, a handle 43 being secured to the stem of the latter. A stock is moulded from plastics material around the ends 39, a lip being provided at the edge to prevent paint running on to the handle whon the brush is in use. A hole 45 may be provided in the handle 43 and the member 41 so that the plastics material used for moulding may join therethrough and lock the component parts together. The brush material may be wire, synthetic plastic filaments, horse hair, cord, or like materials. When wire is used a protective liquid may be disposed between the latter and the coating of plastics material. The plastics material may be nylon, vinyl plastics, trifluorochloroethylene polymers, neoprene, or the like. Specifications 645,407, 657,024,and U.S.A. Specification 2,682,734 are referred to.
