Abstract

A process for the preparation of polyaromatic ethers comprises gradually adding to a mixture of a phenol, a halogenated aromatic compound and a copper-containing catalyst (e.g. copper powder, alloys such as copper bronze, compounds such as cuprous chloride, bromide and iodide, cupric chloride and acetate, and copper tartrate, oxide and sulphate), an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide the temperature of the reaction mixture being kept above 100 DEG C. In examples there were obtained a presence of copper metal and aqueous potash: (1) and (6) di-(phenoxyphenoxy)benzene from phenoxyphenol and dibromobenzene, (2), (3) and (5) m- (or mixed) bromophenyl phenyl ether from phenol and m- (or mixed) dibromobenzene, (4) bis(m-phenoxyphenyl) ether from m-phenoxyphenol and m-bromophenyl phenyl ether; in Example (6) cuprous oxide was used instead of copper. Other products (a), phenols (b), halogenated compounds (c) and hydroxides (d) mentioned in the Specification are:- (a) Ph2O, m-(PhO)2C6H4, s-(PhO)3C6H3 and p-PhOC6H4)2O; (b) p-cresol, 3 : 5-xylenol, mesitol durenol, p-phenoxyphenol, 3 : 5-diethylphenol, p-t-butylphenol, o-hydroxyanisole, p-butoxyphenol, o-phenylphenol and o-naphthylphenol; (c) bromo-, iodo-, 1 : 3- and 1 : 4-dichloro- and 1 : 3 : 5 - tribromobenzenes, p-methylbromobenzene, 3 : 5-dibromo-2 : 4-xylene, p-phenylchlorobenzene, m - bromophenyltoluene, p-bromocumene, p-alphacumylbromobenzene, o-chloroanisole, o-PhOC6H4Br and m-PhOC6H4Cl; (d) NaOH, LiOH.
