Abstract

899,940. Copolymerizing glycidyl esters; solutions of such copolymers in mono- and polyepoxides. DEVOE & RAYNOLDS CO. Inc. Nov. 4, 1960 [Dec. 14, 1959], No. 37981/60. Classes 2(5) and 2(6) Cross-linked thermoset solids are made from a glycidyl ester copolymer solution without the necessity for removing solvent by a process which comprises copolymerizing an unsaturated glycidyl ester and a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer in a solvent which is a mono- or poly-epoxide in which the copolymer is soluble under polymerization conditions, which reacts with the copolymer and/or a cross-linking agent under curing conditions and which has a viscosity not exceeding 130 centipoises at the reaction temperature, and thereafter reacting the resulting copolymer in a system which includes a cross-linking agent for epoxide groups. Glycidyl esters specified are the acrylate, methacrylate and crotonate. Copolymerizable monomers specified are styrene, vinyl toluene and various alpha- and arsubstituted halostyrenes and alkylstyrenes, vinyl, isopropenyl, allyl and substituted allyl esters, esters of acrylic, methacrylic, cyanoacrylic, haloacrylic, crotonic, tiglic, maleic, fumaric and glutaconic acids, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, crotononitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, N-phenylacrylamide and N-methyl-N- phenylacrylamide. Reactive solvents specified are styrene oxide, glycidol, phenylglycidyl ether, butyl glycidyl ether, glycidyl acetate, glycidyl benzoate, polyepoxides prepared by reacting a polyhydric alcohol or phenol with a halohydrin, e.g. the reaction product of bisphenol and epichlorhydrin, the diglycidyl ether of 1,5- pentanediol, the products obtained by the epoxidation of unsaturated esters, e.g. 3,4- epoxy - 6 - methylcyclohexylmethyl - 3,4 - epoxy- 6-methylcyclohexane carboxylate, and the epoxidation products of drying oils and drying oil acids and esters. Polymerization is accelerated by heat and the use of catalysts such as organic peroxides and hydroperoxides, aluminium and stannic chlorides and boron trifluoride. A mixture of monomer and catalyst may be added gradually as the reaction proceeds. Alternatively, polymerization may be carried out in inert solvent, e.g. xylene, which is removed at the end of the polymerization reaction, and replaced by a mono- or poly-epoxide solvent. The cross-linking of the resulting compositions is assisted by the use of compounds such as dicarboxylic acids and anhydrides thereof, amines, quaternary ammonium salts, boron trifluoride, amino amides or a polyisocyanate. The examples describe the use as curing agents of methyl endo-cis-bicyclo- (2,2,1)-5-heptene, 2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride in admixture with dimethylaminomethyl phenol or polypropylene glycol 750, and trimeric soya fatty acids.
