Abstract

899,851. Reactor pressure vessels. ATOMENERGI A.B. April 18, 1961 [April 22, 1960], No. 13961/61. Class 39(4). The pressure resistant casing of a nuclear reactor is formed by the walls of a rock chamber in which the reactor is located. The reactor core is mounted within a vessel, the space between the rock and the vessel being liquid filled. The upper part of the vessel is open so that the free liquid surface and the vessel interior are at the same pressure. A rise in pressure within the vessel is thereby communicated directly to the rock through the liquid rather than through the walls of the vessel. As shown, the reactor core 6, within vessel 1, is mounted in rock chamber 7, the water between 1 and the rock walls having a free surface 5. The open top of 1 is enclosed by cover 2 which is attached to the loading machine 15. The latter consists of the adjustable arm 16 supporting a carriage 20 by which the fuel elements may be manipulated. The control rods 11, 17 are adjusted by the devices 13 and 24. Cooling gas enters and leaves through ducts 23, 22 respectively. Leakage of water through the rock is prevented by cement and plastic surfacing. Alternatively, metal sheathing may be applied with a layer of asbestos between the rock and sheathing.
