Abstract

899,827. Photo-electric control systems. ZELLWEGER Ltd. April 21, 1959 [May 9, 1958], No. 13607/59. Class 40(3). In an arrangement for determining abrupt cross-sectional variations in a textile yarn the latter 9 (Fig. 1) is drawn through two adjacent light beams associated with respective photo-electric cells 5, 10 connected in different arms of a balanced bridge circuit, the arrangement being such that the passage of an abrupt variation through one of the beams upsets the balance of the bridge. A signal derived from the latter is then utilized to operate a cutting device (Fig. 9, not shown) which cuts the yarn at the faulty spot. The Specification includes a mathematical analysis of the operation of the invention which considers the diameters, b, of the light beams and the spacing a between them for various "wavelengths" (related to the staple lengths) of the variations in cross-sectional area of the yarn. A constructional form of the apparatus allowing the distance a between the beams to be varied is described with reference to Fig. 8 (not shown). The control circuit for the cutting device may employ transistors (Figs. 9 and 10, not shown).
