Abstract

Benzene is purified by solidifying by cooling, heating to melt the outer layer or layers of the solid particles and draining away the molten benzene containing impurities and recovering the remaining solid benzene when the desired purity is obtained. Benzene may be extracted from the molten impure benzene and recycled. The process removes especially saturated hydrocarbons and some thiophene, and may be combined with known methods for removing thiophene; hydrorefining should be effected before the process. The technique and apparatus used are as described in the parent Specification. Specifications 846,172 and 846,173 also are referred to.
