Abstract
899,725. Thermal switches. VENTREX ROOFING Ltd. Sept. 21, 1959 [Nov. 24, 1958], No. 32052/59. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XIII] A thermally-deformable frame 1 is formed by two members joined at their ends by rivets 3 through spacing members 2 and these ends are connected by a tensioning member, comprising a wire rod, e.g. profiled or flat or, as shown, a tube 4c, having the same coefficient of expansion as the frame 1 and two strips 4a of higher or lower expansion which are each secured by a rivet 4d at one end to one end of the tube 4c and at the other end secured to the far end of the tube 4c. If the strips 4a are of low expansion material, thermal expansion of the tube 4c (which may be heated by an electric resistance, Figs. 3, 4, not shown), with or without expansion of the frame 1, causes the ends of the frame to be moved nearer to one another and bends 1c in the respective frame members to move apart. As shown, the frame is pivoted at 11 on a U-shaped support 10 and bears against an upper adjustable abutment 13a so that the relative movement of the bends 1c operates snap-acting contacts 8 through an insulating pin 13b. The tube 4c may be formed in two halves joined by rivets 4f, Fig. 2, or by adhesive. There are apertures 1b in the frame members to reduce the thermal inertia and these members have edge flanges 1a.
