Abstract
Crude acrylonitrile containing impurities such as methylvinylketone, cyanobutadiene and divinylacetylene is purified by mixing it with anhydrous aluminium chloride, stirring, fractionally distilling the mixture to separate acrylonitrile from the complex methylvinylketone-aluminium chloride compounds and polymers of cyanobutadiene and divinylacetylene which are formed, neutralizing the distillate with sodium hydroxide or diethylamine, and distilling the neutralised product. Cuprous chloride may be added as a polymerization inhibitor to the mixture during the first distillation step.
