Abstract

The invention comprises optically active a -2-phenyl - 3 - methyltetrahydro - 1, 4 - oxazine and its hydrochloride and the preparation thereof by reducing optically active phenyl acetyl carbinol, or a mixture of optically active and racemic forms, in the presence of monoethanolamine, removing volatile solvents by distillation, dissolving the residue in a dilute aqueous solution of sulphuric acid containing at most 3 mols of sulphuric acid to 1 mol of the impure base, distilling off water from the obtained solution at a temperature not exceeding 60 DEG C., completing the cyclisation by heating the residue at a temperature not exceeding 100 DEG C. under reduced pressure, neutralizing the diluted residue to a pH 6,5-7.5, removing the precipitated ballast compounds, adjusting the solution to pH 10-12, separating the liberated base, converting it into a salt, preferably the hydrochloride, and isolating the optically active a -isomer salt by criystallization from organic solvents.
