Abstract

898,880. Milling-cutters. LAXHAM, J., CHERRY, J., and HOLLIS, W. S. Oct. 25, 1960 [Oct. 26, 1959], No. 36258/59. Class 83 (3). A face milling cutter comprises a number of cutting edges each lying in a plane tangential to a circle centred on the cutter axis, the circle lying in a second plane perpendicular to the cutter axis, the operative part of the edge having one end in the second plane and the other end being further from a third plane passing through the axis and the point at which the first plane touches the circle. The cutter body has a cylindrical recess 3 and a diametral slot 4 in its upper end. Four cylindrical cutter-receiving recesses 6 are formed in the body having their axes tangential to a base circle 8 and each axis being inclined upwardly at 6 degrees, Fig. 2. In each recess a disc 13 is secured by a screw 20, a clamp 19, and a positioning disc 14. Each disc can be indexed round and turned over before it needs to be reground on a mandrel 22, Fig. 6. In a cutter for taking a bigger cut, the discs are mounted progressively nearer to the axis and to the work. The discs can be set at less than 6 degrees or may be frusto-conical or have dished faces. A modified disc 44, Fig. 9, has a positive rake angle of 10 degrees instead of a negative rake of 6 degrees as in Fig. 4. The disc 44 has conical carbide cutting rings 45 brazed thereon and locating holes to receive an indexing pin 46. A further modified cutter 50, Fig. 11, is resharpened by grinding it on its front face 51. Alternatively, the cutter 55, Fig. 12, may be hexagonal, being fitted within a slot 56 and against a locating pin 57.
