Abstract
Polyvinyl acetate based emulsion paints containing cellulosic materials (e.g. sodium carboxymethylcellulose) as thickeners may be protected against attack by bacteria, yeasts and fungi by addition of an alkyl mercuric N-substituted dithiocarbamate of formula <FORM:0897854/IV (a)/1> where R1 is a phenyl or alkyl radical, and R2 and R3 which may be the same or different each represent an alkyl radical. A specified compound is ethylmercuric-N-methyl-N-phenyl-dithiocarbamate.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:0897854/IV (b)/1> in which R1 represents a phenyl or alkyl radical, and R2 and R3 which may be the same or different each represent an alkyl radical. Specified compounds are ethylmercuric-N-methyl-N-phenyldithiocarbamate, ethyl mercuric-N-N-ethyl-N-phenyl dithiocarbamate, ethylmercuric-N,N-dimethyldithiocarbamate and ethylmercuric-N,N-diethyldithiocarbamate. They may be prepared by reacting a salt of formula R1-R2NCSSA wherein A represents an alkali metal or ammonium and R1 and R2 are as defined above with a salt providing the radical R3Hg+ such as a bis(alkyl mercuric)phosphate or an alkyl mercuric halide. The reaction may be carried out in an aqueous medium. The salt R1R2NCSSA may be prepared in situ if desired from an amine R1R2NH, carbon disulphide and the appropriate base. The compounds of the invention possess anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activity and may be used to prevent the deterioration of wood pulp during its manufacture and of emulsion paints containing cellulosic materials (see Groups IV(a), VI and VIII).ALSO:A composition having antibacterial and antifungal properties comprises a compound of formula <FORM:0897854/VI/1> where R1 is a phenyl or alkyl radical and R2 and R3 which may be the same or different each represents an alkyl radical, together with a carrier or diluent. Specified compounds include ethylmercuric-N-methyl-N-phenyldithiocarbamate, ethylmercuric-N-ethyl-N-phenyl-dithiocarbamate, ethyl mercuric-N,N-dimethyl-dithiocarbamate and ethylmercuric - N,N - diethyldithiocarbamate. A specified carrier is sodium carboxymethylcellulose. Dispersing and suspending agents and solvents may also be included.
