Abstract
897,772. Counters. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Sept. 5, 1958 [Sept. 12, 1957], No. 28390/58. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XL (a)] An arrangement for counting impulses of light or of electricity comprises a set of electrooptical cells I, II, III, &c., the count being stepped from cell to cell, each comprising a number of electro-optical elements including an electroluminescent 5 and first 3, second 16, and third 13 photo-conductive elements arranged for illumination by the electroluminescent element 5, the first photo-conductive element 3 being connected electrically in series with the electroluminescent element 5 of its own cell, the second 16 being connected electrically in series with an element of the next cell, and the third 13 being connected effectively in shunt with the electroluminescent element 5 of the preceding cell. Optical screening means 19 is provided. A common light source 24 is arranged for the illumination of all the first photoconductive elements 3 at an impulse. A member 23, shaped to form a symbol identifying its particular cell, is arranged for illumination of the electroluminescent layer 15 of its cell. In a modification for counting electrical impulses applied to the cells the common light source 24 is replaced by an electroluminescent element, actuated by the impulses, superimposed on the electroluminescent element 5 in each cell, and the symbol member 23 is replaced by part of the electroluminescent layer 5 being arranged to form the symbol. In a further modification for counting electrical impulses a layer whose resistance decreases with increase of applied voltage, e.g. cadmium sulphide or silicon carbide, and which is connected to the electrical impulses, is superimposed on each photo-conductive layer 3, and part of a transparent insulating base supporting the cell elements is covered by a mask in the form of a symbol for identification of the cell. In a still further modification for counting electrical impulses the cells, instead of being arranged in line, are arranged with transparent electroluminescent elements 5 of the cells partially one behind the other in such a manner that the symbols appropriate to each cell are aligned one behind the other.
