Abstract

897,441. Seaming. STEPHENS, K. W. Sept. 24, 1958 [June 27, 1957], No. 30314/57. Class 42 (1). A method of manufacturing a large sheet of flexible material by joining edge-to-edge a plurality of panels of the material each of a length equal to one dimension of the finished sheet wherein a first panel 13 has a flanking panel 14 seamed thereto at 15 and folded longitudinally at 16 so that its free edge substantially overlies the seam 15, a similar panel 17 being seamed to the opposite edge of the panel 13. Panels are added alternately on each side to form two concertina-like stacks standing side by side on the panel 13. As shown in Fig. 1 the material is placed on a bench 1 provided with a series of idler rollers 6 and the edges are seamed by means of two seam welding heads 11 each mounted on a trolley that runs beside the bench 1, the heads 11 being vertically adjustable. The centre of the bench is formed as a removable trolley 3 and the finished sheet is rolled as shown in Fig. 1 and removed from the bench on the trolley 3.
