Abstract

Textiles of aromatic polyesters are coloured by applying an aqueous dispersion of a dyestuff of the naphthoylene-aryl-iminazole or naphthaloperinone series which is free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups and is of the formula <FORM:0897436/IV (c)/1> wherein R represents an o- or peri-arylen, radical and the naphthalene nucleus A carries' in one of the free peri-positions, a radical R1CO-wherein R1 represents an alkyl, substituted alkyl, or aralkyl or an aryl radical. The radical R may be o-phenylene or 1 : 8-naphthylene substituted, if desired, by nitro, cyano, halogeno, alkoxy, alkyl or substituted alkyl groups, or the radical R may be <FORM:0897436/IV (c)/2> Dyeing is preferably effected at the boil in the presence of a carrier, or at temperatures above 100 DEG C. in the absence of a carrier. Numerous examples of the dyeing of polyethylene terephthalate fibres are given. The dyestuffs are made by condensing a dicarboxylic acid of the formula <FORM:0897436/IV (c)/3> wherein the naphthalene nucleus A is substituted by R1CO- as above, with a diamine R(NH2)2, the condensation being effected by heating in, for example, acetic acid or nitrobenzene. A mixture of at least two isomers is usually obtained, the mixture being employed as such, or the isomers may first be separated by crystallisation. Specification 789,310 is referred to.
