Abstract

Monomeric or partially polymerized vinyl-containing organic compounds are partially or further polymerized in a non-compression preforming mould in the presence of a catalyst at between room temperature and 95 DEG C. to produce a performed article which will retain its shape at room temperature, and the polymerization is completed in a compression mould at a pressure of up to 1,000 p.s.i. Acrylate and alkacrylate monomeric or partially polymerized compounds, particularly methyl methacrylate syrups, having a viscosity of between 0,1 and 150 poises at 25 DEG C. are preferred. Temperature is a critical factor during the preform stage and should preferably be between 45 DEG and 50 DEG C. while the final polymerization should preferably be effected at between 80 DEG and 150 DEG C. In one example, an initial monomer-polymer slurry is prepared from methyl methacrylate 120, polymethyl methacrylate 120 and a ,a 1-azodiisobutyronitrile (catalyst) 0,2 lbs. When a viscosity of 20 poises is attained, n-propyl sulphite 0,8 lb. may be added, if desired. In other examples, benzoyl peroxide, t-butyl peracetate, 2,4-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide and dimethyl aniline are used as catalysts. U.S.A. Specification 2,471,959 is referred to.ALSO:Monomeric or partially polymerized vinyl-containing organic compounds are partially or further polymerized in a non-compression preforming mould in the presence of a catalyst at between room temperature and 95 DEG C. to produce a preformed article which will retain its shape at room temperature, and the polymerization is completed in a compression mould at a pressure of up to 1000 psi. Acrylate and alkacrylate monomeric or partially polymerized compounds, particularly methyl methacrylate syrups, having a viscosity of between 0,1 and 150 poises at 25 DEG C. are preferred. Temperature is a critical factor during the preform stage and should preferably be between 45 DEG and 50 DEG C. while the temperature of the final polymerization should preferably be between 80 DEG and 150 DEG C. When preforms with glass fibre reinforcement are to be made, the reinforcement is inserted before the first stage polymerization, e.g. by placing a fibre mat in the preform mould and then adding the syrup with a "squeegeeing" action. Metal screens, ferrous or non-ferrous, may also be used as reinforcement. U.S.A. Specification 2,471,959 is referred to.
