Abstract

897,373. Reactors. ATOMENERGI A.B. March 14, 1960 [March 20, 1959; Oct. 12, 1959; Dec.,17, 1959], No. 8900/60. Class 39(4). In. a reactor using D 2 O as coolant and moderator, the fuel assemblies have a length in the direction of flow of the D 2 O which is less than one tenth of the length of the core and are spaced so that the D 2 O must pass through a moderator space between leaving one assembly and entering the next. This promotes mixing in the D 2 O and improves the stability of the reactor. Fig. 3 shows a boiling water reactor having an inlet 12, a baffle close to the. inlet, and fuel assemblies 17 suspended on wires or the like with spaces between assemblies. Fig. 4 shows an assembly of fuel 'rods soldered to brackets; a baffle 27 between assemblies diverts ascending D 2 0 and steam. An alternative assembly has fuel balls joined by spacers. Fig. 6 shows a pressurized water reactor with an inlet 42, fuel assembly discs 44, and sealing plates 45, the fuel is in horizontal rods or vertical plates. Fig. 8 shows a stack of fuel plates held by guides 62 which slide on rods in a reactor; the fuel plates may be replaced by balls in perforated trays. Similar stacks may be used without guides and offset to provide control rod channels, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown). The stacks may contain baffles to cause lateral coolant flow, and may have domes which collect steam formed by overheating and reduce the reactivity by increasing the void space in the core.
