Abstract

897,174. Rack-mounted electrical equipment. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH Ltd. Dec. 21, 1959 [Jan. 28, 1958], No. 3021/59. Class 37. A mounting arrangement for printed-circuit cards comprises substantially parallel side members held in spaced relationship, shelf-like card supports extending between the side members and each card support being channelled parallel with the front face of the arrangement to form recesses in the upper and lower surfaces thereof, guide members located in recesses of selected adjacent pairs of card supports and arranged to support side edges of cards inserted therebetween and electrical connectors positioned to engage one side edge of all or selected supported cards to effect electrical connections to the printed wiring thereon. The two side members 1, 2 between which shelves 3, 4 are suspended accommodate the printed cards, the side members being separated by spacer plates 25, 26 upon which are mounted multi-point sockets 5, 6, 7. Each shelf is located horizontally by square holes such as 12, 14, 16, 18 and slides into channels 20, 21 screwed to folded brackets 10, 11 welded to side members 1, 2. The corrugations of the corrugated sheet metal shelves form recesses and serve to accommodate guide members such as 31, 32, 33, 34, 35 screwed thereto, each guide member being of moulded resin and slotted on its outer face, the front and rear ends of the projections between the slots being chamfered as at 36, 37. Those slots which are not to be used on a particular shelf are closed by blocking pieces 51, 52, 53. Connections between the bay-to-bay wiring and the equipment on an individual rack are made on terminal blocks mounted at the front of each upright member 1, 2, on a strip 58 attached to channel 21 and carrying a bracket 59. This bracket is slotted at intervals to engage corresponding projections, such as 60, on a series of individual moulded connector elements such as 61, 62. Bay-to-bay cabling is accommodated in the channels formed by side members and their welded brackets. Apart from single cards such as 40, multiple units made up of two or more cards 79, 80, 82, 83 which may contain a screen 81 can be formed.
