Abstract
896,558. Glass manufacture. OWENS-ILLINOIS GLASS CO. July 14, 1959, No. 24118/59. Class 56. Coloured, particularly green glass, is made by flowing a molten base glass through a forehearth and adding a highly-coloured frit containing hexavalent chromium. The base glass is substantially colourless and preferably contains Small amounts of iron and titanium may be present as impurities. The frit preferably contains The chromium is provided by iron chromate and potassium dichromate in the frit batch constituents which may also contain sodium nitrate to oxidise any ferrous iron and prevent it from reducing the hexavalent chromium, The latter is then available to oxidize ferrous iron in the base glass. Any excess remaining in the finished glass renders it opaque to ultra-violet radiation. Specification 830,450 is referred to.
