Abstract
896,540. Optical joints. OPTISCHE INDUSTRIE DE OUDE DELFT N.V. Feb. 3, 1960 [Feb. 3, 1959], No. 3849/60. Class 97(1). An optical joint between a first pivotable tubular member and a second member includes a plane mirror carried by said second member and so linked to the pivotable member that it rotates by one half of the amount of the pivotable member which latter rides on an arcuate slide track on the said second member having a slot for the passage of light therethrough, a cover slide fixed to the mirror (and fitting closely to the slide track) helping to prevent outward passage of light through the marginal portions of the slot, and a hood attached to the pivotable member covering those regions of the slot not traversed by a light beam through the optical system and not covered by the cover slide. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4 a mirror 12 is attached to a cover slide 6 formed by two sector shaped plates 7, 8 and end plates 9, 10 terminating in ledges 19, 18 and defining an aperture 11, said cover slide being pivotably mounted in a part 3 of an optical apparatus for pivoting about an axis M through the plane of the mirror. In sector 8 there is a spiral slot 16 and in the adjacent and parallel housing wall of 3 there is a linear slot 17. An eyepiece 1 carries a hood 2 which can cover part of an opening 5 in the slide track 4 of the fixed part 3 of the apparatus, and which includes a portion parallel to sector 8 and having a spiral slot 15 of half the curvature of slot 16 in the sector 8. A pin 20 engages all three slots so that rotation of the eyepiece 1 causes a rotation in the cover slide 6 of half that of the eyepiece. A ray 14 will thus always be directed along the eyepiece axis. The cover slide and hood dimension are such that in an extreme position, as in Fig. 3, both co-operate to close the wide margin of the slot, the ledges 18 and 19 preventing the exit of tangential rays.
