Abstract
<PICT:0896535/III/1> A stream of liquid is tested for the presence and/or quantity of a volatile contaminant by bringing the stream to a controlled temperature and pressure, passing through a pressure letdown device to a zone of controlled lower pressure to volatilize the contaminant and measuring the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet streams of said device. As shown in the Figure, the pressure reduction device is a spring and ball valve 4 and the change of temperature is measured by resistance thermometers 7 and 8 which are connected into a Wheatstone bridge. A constricted tube may be employed in place of the valve. A sample stream is withdrawn from the main liquid flow line 18 through a filter device 21 by means of gear pump 10 and passed to a heater 5 controlled by resistance thermometer 6. After passing the valve 4, the mixture is passed to a cooler 12 and a combined cooler, vent and reservoir 13 before being returned to the main stream by gear pump 11. A pressure indicator 23 and sampling point 24, alternative supply device 17 and a pressure release valve 15 and indicator 14 are also provided.
