[Also in Group XXI] A cable-cutter operated by a cartridge 37 containing a bullet 36 comprises a cutter 10 with a piston 11 slidable in a barrel 6, a cartridge holder 38 in a chamber 7 communicating with the barrel, means 25 for firing the cartridge, and passage means 42 connecting the base of the holder 38 with the barrel 6 and of a size such that the explosion gases rupture the cartridge case at the passage means and escape to the barrel to drive the cutter towards the cable 3. The cutter coacts with a die 16 engaging screwthreads in the end of the barrel recessed at 15 to receive the cable. Plungers 12 biased by a spring 13 hold the cutter in its withdrawn position. The holder, in sections to facilitate removal of a spent cartridge from which the end of the holder prevents escape of the bullet, may have four gas openings 42 leading into axial passages 43, 44 in a part of the holder having an annular recess extending between flanges 39, 40. An opening 18 admits the gas behind the piston. The firing pin 24 is operated, against the pressure of a spring 27, by a solenoid 29 and is mounted on the chamber 7 by a screwthreaded ring 21. A recess 41 in the holder 38 facilitates its removal for re-loading. The cablecutter may be mounted on the lifting boom (Fig. 1, not shown) of a helicopter. If the cutter is not arrested by impact between the piston 11 and the cylinder head, the end of the cutter may strike the bottom of a die (Fig. 9, not shown) secured by a cap.
