Abstract

896,425. Endless conveyer systems. MEYER MANUFACTURING CO., GEO. J. Jan. 4, 1960 [Aug. 12, 1959], No. 209/60. Class 78 (1). A conveyer system for transporting bottles or other articles from a supply to one or more receivers, e.g. bottle-filling machines F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP>, comprises a number of accumulating devices arranged in series, each consisting of a number of endless slat-type auxiliary belts 24a-24d arranged side-by-side and to one side of a main slat-type belt 24 which determines the normal path of the articles, there being deflectors across the delivery ends of all the belts which tend to return the bottles to the normal path. When one of the machines F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP> stops the bottles build up back along the system, being progressively caused to spread laterally into the various accumulating devices until the obstruction ceases. It is said that by having a plurality of relatively short accumulators instead of a single long one breakage of bottles is prevented. Each main conveyer belt 24 is of a width to accommodate a single line of bottles and these belts are driven at the same speed by separate motors M<SP>1</SP>-M<SP>4</SP> through adjustable gearings S<SP>1</SP>-S<SP>4</SP>, respectively, the auxiliary belts 24a-24d being driven at a speed about one-fifth to one-eighth that of the respective belt 24 through gearing G from the respective main belt drive gearing. The bottles pass from the last accumulating device to wider belts 47, 48 each accommodating three rows of bottles and driven through common gearing S<SP>5</SP> from motor M5, and thence to similar belts 51, 52, driven through respective gearings S<SP>6</SP> S<SP>7</SP> from motors M<SP>6</SP>, M' by which these belts supply machines F<SP>1</SP>, F2 and subsequent packing- machines P<SP>1</SP>, P<SP>2</SP> at the maximum rate which these machines can handle the bottles. In order to protect the system from excessive pressure of bottles should both machines F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP> stop, each machine has a limit switch 53, 54 respectively, whose contacts open when the machine stops. Also a switch 55 is arranged on a guide at the feed end of belts 47 and has a feeler 56 operated by back pressure of bottles on these belts. Similar switches and feelers 44, 45; 61, 62; 59, 60; 57, 58 are arranged at the feed ends of each of the accumulator devices so that they are operated when the associated accumulator is nearly full. As seen in Fig. 7, the switches are in circuit with contactor coils C<SP>1</SP>-C<SP>6</SP> for energizing the respective drive motors M<SP>1</SP>-M<SP>6</SP> of the associated conveyers, but are also interconnected in such a way that even when a switch is opened it can only de-energize the corresponding contactor coil if the switch associated with the following accumulating device or conveyer is open and if both the limit switches 53, 54 are open. In the latter case the conveyers of the system are stopped sequentially as bottles build up back along the system to open the successive switches.
