A device for sampling soil comprises a tube 11 having at one end of the bore an obturating means comprising an inflatable bag 21 which when deflated does not obstruct the bore. The bag is held in a groove 16 by rings 26, and is inflated by air flowing through a one-way valve 23. When deflated gaps between the bag and groove are sealed. The end of the tube adjacent the bag has a cutting edge 14 and the other end of the tube is threaded at 15 for attachment to a drill rod.
