Abstract

<PICT:0895779/III/1> <PICT:0895779/III/2> An apparatus for mixing liquids to form emulsions or to polymerize or bring together reactants for polymerization comprises a cylinder into which the component materials are introduced under pressure (material of lower viscosity preferably being injected into the material of higher viscosity) and which is equipped with a rotatable spring stirrer in the form of a right cylindrical or right conical helix. Specified polymers are polyurethane plastics, either dense or foamed, polyester or epoxide resins, polyvinyl chloride pastes and latex foam materials. The contents of the cylinder are ejected by a piston 1 which when actuated compresses the stirrer S into a recess 4 in the bottom 2 of the cylinder. In a modification (Fig. 1, not shown) the stirrer is attached to the piston. Mixtures or reactives involving successive additives may be made or carried out by connecting two or more cylinders in series (see Fig. 4, not shown). The apparatus may be used for batch processes as described, or by rendering the piston and outlet valve inoperative, for continuous processes (see Fig. 3, not shown). The outlet valve may be operated automatically by the temperature of the reactive. Fillers and/or gases may be introduced into the mixing chamber. Fig. 5 shows diagramatically an installation in which polyester and activator are supplied by pumps 14, 18 from containers 13, 17 to the premixing chamber having an agitator 20. The mixture is introduced into the agitation chamber 23 into which isocyanate is delivered by the pump 25 from the container 24; the liquids are homogenized by the stirrer 27 which takes the form of a light conical helix, and ejected by the piston 33 actuates the hydraulic ram 32.
